How Kavita Sharma reinvents herself with a career in Transactions at Deloitte

Returning to work after a career break can be a challenging and exciting time. Kavita Sharma talks about how she diversified her career path and met those challenges head on.

  1. When did you join Deloitte and what is your role? I joined Deloitte in September 2017 through the Return to Work Programme. I am a Manager in Transaction Services in the Birmingham office.
  2. What is your educational background? I did a degree in Accountancy and Economics at Southampton and qualified as a Chartered Accountant at Arthur Andersen, London. I recently studied New Economic Powers BRICs at the University of Oxford.
  3. What made you pursue a career in your field and why did you apply to Deloitte? Having worked in industry for nearly ten years, I fancied re-inventing myself and taking on a new challenge as part of returning after a career break. I'd been involved in a few transactions previously - including my own purchase of a company out of liquidation - and wanted to formalise that experience in a professional services firm. I chose Deloitte as it offered the best Return to Work Programme by far.
  4. What do you like best about working for Deloitte? I'm really enjoying exploring the vast opportunities open to me here in Transactions, and beyond. I like my career to be diverse and enjoy challenging myself. I had an amazing career mentor previously (he is still a great friend) and similarly, at Deloitte, my sponsoring Partner is proving instrumental in guiding me to achieve my potential. I hope to navigate the firm with her support. Being able to work flexibly is great too as it enables me to strike a good work-life balance.
  5. What are your interests in or out of work?I lead a very busy life with two young daughters and their various social engagements - which are far more interesting than mine! In my 'spare' time, I volunteer for a local before/after school club, (try and) keep fit by swimming, running, long walks in the countryside, and enjoy Sunday evenings on the sofa watching family movies. I also love travelling and have taken off several times with friends in between jobs. My most memorable escapade was a voluntary sabbatical for a year travelling with my husband.
