University or work? Rachel chose both with us

Technology BrightStart Rachel wanted to do more than learn, so wasn’t sure if full-time university was for her. She found a better way with us, and has never looked back.

When did you join Deloitte and what’s your role within the company?

I joined Deloitte in September 2016, as a Test analyst under Consulting. At the minute I am working on a cross-platform technology solution in Bath, Monday – Friday.

What is your educational background?

I am currently working towards a BSc in Business Technology in Ulster University through the BrightStart scheme.

Why Technology? And why Deloitte?

When I left school after my A Levels, I knew I didn’t want to go down the generic university route. I am still attending university on a part–time basis, but four days a week I get to work on site with a client, gaining valuable experience and learning more and more about today’s technology.

What do you like best about working here?

Deloitte really value their employees, no matter what grade you are. Working in such a cultured and diverse firm, where there are no judgements, is motivation enough. Also, my job has let me create friendships which I would never have created without it.

What were your top three reasons for joining our BrightStart scheme?

By joining the BrightStart programme, I knew I could gain experience in a successful firm, which many of my peers aren’t gaining. I can also obtain industry-recognised qualifications such as BCS and ISTQUB. Lastly, I’m gaining a degree in an up-and-coming sector.

In one paragraph, how would you describe your apprenticeship or Graduate journey or internship?

During my career thus far, I have made many relationships with people my age, and also older people, in a higher grade than me. The scheme has allowed me to travel to different places, and work with many different types of people. I am also gaining knowledge which I wouldn’t have if I had gone down the traditional university route, which is invaluable. Overall, the scheme has allowed me to mature and really understand what I would like to do with my career in later life.

What are your interests outside of work?

I’m quite interested in history topics after studying it for A Level. I am mostly interested by World War II and movies which recreate this. I also love driving and taking nature walks.

If blending work and study appeals to you too, why not become a BrightStart apprentice yourself? Check out our technology opportunities here.
