Bowale Lawal and Manik Memon – Making a difference in Audit & Assurance

If you’ve ever wondered what makes your colleagues tick, now is your chance to find out. We’ve spent time exploring what two of our Audit and Assurance Managers enjoy most about their work and home life and discover why a career at Deloitte is so special to them.

Bowale Lawal's story:

How did you join Deloitte?

I joined Deloitte’s Jersey office in the UK following a referral from a former colleague and friend that worked in Nigeria.

What are you responsible for in your role?

My current role involves acting as a field senior on audit engagement, including supervising associates and their assigned audit tasks. I also assist Audit Managers and Partners with managing their client’s interactions and progress of the audit. It is my responsibility to collate all identified audit issues and discuss them with both senior team members and client contacts.

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?

My most memorable moment so far was assisting at, and organising, the Mind charity shop in Jersey. They are a charitable organisation and also our office partner.

How are you supported to work flexibly?

Compared to my previous employers, Deloitte is unique in their approach to work flexibility. Previously, I put in extra work hours for an engagement, to get it finalised, meaning I could take the afternoon off.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Living on such a beautiful island, I have the perfect opportunities to go for long walks and explore the scenery.

Manik Memon's story:

How did you join Deloitte?

I joined Deloitte because an ex-colleague of mine was working in the Deloitte Jersey Office. He had mentioned about the inclusive office culture, the better career progressions and the beautiful island life that comes with it. In short, everything I wanted in a role. The next thing was an interview being scheduled, and now I am here.

What are you responsible for in your role?

As a Manager in Audit & Assurance, the key part of my role is to manage a portfolio of audit engagements including managing resourcing and job economics, managing our client relationships, coaching our team members on the job, and lastly facilitating PE training for experienced hire.

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?

For me, the most memorable moment was my engagement director thanked me personally for the outstanding work on an audit project and awarded me a Limelight. This then meant I was awarded Limelight for all projects I completed in 2018.

How are you supported to work flexibly?

When no physical presence is required for client or office meetings, I will work from home. Every year during Ramadan, I work flexible hours by starting and finishing early.
