Chris Wademan and Rachel Yates – From School Runs to Reviews in Audit & Assurance

Chris Wademan's story:

How did you join Deloitte?

In 2006, I joined Deloitte’s Audit Graduate programme. Ever since, I have stayed in the Auditing department, and have progressed up to a Senior Manager.

What are you responsible for in your role

I am currently holding a few roles, I’m the Head of 2 separate centres of excellence, the SACC (subsidiary accounts centre) and ICE (International Audit Centre). I’m responsible for determining the structures and strategy for the Centre’s, as well as the performance of operations. This usually includes monitoring resource requirements and quality.

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?

My most memorable moments are the charitable work and activities the firm has given me time off to participate in. I have raised thousands of pounds for our local office charities; from cycling Lands’ End to John O’Groats, climbing Kilimanjaro, and trekking across the Namibian Desert.

What’s the best part of your job and in what ways is your team innovative?

The best part of my job is definitely the freedom I am given to be innovative with our audit approach. We have also built a centre that is at the forefront of global transformation, which is utilising people in the right ways, with a culture of good quality audits using ADC’s to complete work, which is driving efficiencies.

Rachel Yates' story:

How did you join Deloitte?

I was looking for more flexibility, so I discussed the role with a recruitment agent, and found it was a perfect fit.

What are you responsible for in your role?

My main role is supporting audit engagement teams by completing quality and risk reviews associated with the audit of statutory accounts and inter-office reporting. I also spend one day a week supporting our quality and risk team during the EQCR partner allocation process, ensuring adequate documentation as required by the FRC.  

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?

I worked on the review of a large group that we had recently won the audit of. The client had shown reservations regarding PSR because the previous auditors had not felt this additional review was necessary. Not only did all accounts get signed on time, but they were actually signed 2 weeks earlier than the previous year!

How are you supported to work flexibly?

I work extremely flexible, by working both part-time and during term time only. I also work from home every Wednesday, which gives me the perfect mix of work and family life.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I am actively involved in my sons’ school volunteering as both a parent governor and treasurer of the PTA.
