Daniel Parkin – Tax in the fast lan | Deloitte UK has been saved
Daniel Parkin, Consultant in our Global Employer Services Tax team in London, has seen some serious career progression since he joined us as a BrightStart. From promotions to marathons, he looks back on some of his greatest feats in 2018.
When did you join Deloitte and what is your role within the company?
My primary role is to analyse client compensation data and redistribute globally to client payroll teams. This involves liaising daily with other Deloitte teams within the UK and globally, along with coordination with various clients (either via email, phone or face to face meetings).
What made you pursue a career in your field?
I was set to go to university to study Economics when a former student at my school came to do a talk about career routes other than university. She did a school leaver scheme at another Big 4 firm. This led me to explore other options. When I got offered a place at Deloitte, I had to make the decision to either choose university or move to London to start work; I chose the latter and have no regrets!
What do you like best about working for Deloitte?
The first thing that comes to mind is the people I’ve met. When I first joined, I was assigned a second-year school leaver ‘buddy’, who was the same age as myself and has since become one of my closest friends – we’ve even been on holiday together a few times! I have also just come back from Amsterdam with a BrightStart in my year who I met on a 3-week residential course when I first joined back in 2015. When I turned down university, a big concern was missing out on gaining a group of close friends my own age; however, I needn’t have worried!
What were your top 4 most memorable achievements and proudest stories from your professional and personal life in 2018?
Getting promoted to Consultant grade and attending the ‘Consultant Milestone Event’; which is a 3-day intensive learning course to help you in your new role (but also a big celebration!)
Getting to ride on the Deloitte bus at London Pride alongside other members of GLOBE (Deloitte LGBTQ+ society) and David Sproul himself (Deloitte UK CEO)!
I decided to get active and ran my first half marathon earlier this year at Richmond Park.
Participated in the Deloitte Millennial Tax event. This was a focus group of around 40 analysts/ consultants to brainstorm with senior partners within Tax on how to improve working culture, innovation and other key aspects.
Reflect back in 2018, what were your key motivation drivers; how has your creativity help you overcome challenges experienced at work?
One main motivational driver this year was making the final push for promotion. This involved regular catch ups with my engagement teams and coach to ensure I was on track and doing the right work to achieve my goals. Getting positive and constructive feedback along the way really helped to keep my motivation levels high.
