Louise Nickson – Helping colleagues grow and achieve the impossible within Consulting

Louise worked for us back in 2002 as a graduate. After she left, she realised how much she missed it and came right back. Now she is thriving in her role as a Director in our Technology Strategy & Transformation team.

How did you join Deloitte?

I’ve actually been a part of Deloitte for a long time. I started my journey back in 2002 when I joined the Consulting Graduate Programme for three years. I then left to join the world of Corporate Banking and stayed there for three years. I soon realised I was missing Deloitte, so I rejoined in 2008, and haven’t looked back since.

What are you responsible for in your role?

I am responsible for the focus on Transformation Delivery in our Banking sector, creating and delivering technology that enables outcomes for CTO/CIOs. I also lead the Finance Service Business of Technology team, of around 40 practitioners, as well as being responsible for market building and creating the culture that supports personal growth, innovation and insight, through harnessing the next generation of tech trends.

What’s a typical day like for you?

Variety is the key factor for me when I work. It keeps me interested and satisfied and helps me to produce my best work. A typical day can usually involve multiple client meetings, travelling around, and attending industry events. Alongside completing activities that focus on our practise and people. Although I try to keep my days planned, other priorities and schedules can arise. I believe it is so important to make time to coach my team members and will often spend unscheduled time providing them with my support.

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?

That’s a tough one. There have been so many memorable moments here, I couldn’t possibly choose.  One specific one that comes to mind is playing mixed hockey in the annual corporate games up in Newcastle. I may not be a good hockey player, but we played our part and we did it in abundance!

What’s the best part of your job and in what ways is your team innovative?

Without a doubt, the best part of my job is seeing people grow and achieve what they thought wasn’t possible. It’s a bit selfish, but I love experiencing that a-ha moment people have. To date, I have contributed to over 1000 a-ha moments, thanks to the EMEA Consultant milestone programme at Deloitte University.

Why would you recommend Deloitte to someone?

Deloitte is a fantastic company to work for because of the colleagues that have your back. They will actively support you as you progress throughout your life and your career, it’s reassuring. I also believe the dynamic nature of the work the clients and people keep me interested. I know that I will never get bored here, and I’ll continue to grow.

How are you supported to work flexibly?

Some days I’ll work from home and will organise my day so I can have breakfast with my daughter. I’ll get her to school, and then spend some time focusing on how we better serve our clients and deliver our plan, as well as juggling video and conference calls. I always joke that my bag is my office, so I can work literally everywhere.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My spare time is always spent with my beautiful daughter. As a single parent, I work hard in the week so I can spend my whole weekend with her and spend quality time together. This usually involves me getting up at the crack of dawn to ferry her off to ice skating and dance lessons, somehow, we manage to squeeze in seeing family and friends too.
