Luke Courtney — You can have it all in Audit

Exciting projects, new locations, fresh ideas and the chance to make an impact. There’s so much to enjoy about being an Associate in our Audit Assurance team in Gatwick.

How did you join Deloitte and what’s a typical day like for you?

I joined Deloitte on the BrightStart Apprenticeship. The general misconception about Audit is that the hours are long and not as fun as other jobs. From my experience, the job is as fun as you make it. The team environment is amazing, and you make great friends along the way!

Throughout this year, I’ve developed many new skills, as well as improving ones I already had. During the first four years, BrightStarts within Audit and Assurance work towards their ACA qualification too, which means we take multiple exams and gain invaluable work experience.

Within Audit you get to travel a lot to different parts of the country, or sometimes the world. This keeps the work interesting as the environment is always changing.

What was your most memorable moment on the job so far?

One client was a start-up. It was fascinating seeing how fast they’d grown in a year and I felt excited working on it, knowing that next year it was likely to be double the size.

I’m also proud when our audit files are complete. It’s the result of all our hard work, so we often go out and celebrate.

What’s the best part of your job and in what ways is your team innovative?

The thing I love most about this job is the variety. You’re often working in different locations, on new projects or with colleagues you've not worked with before. It makes each day interesting.

Deloitte are always looking at new ideas. They listen to people of all grades and service lines, allowing the whole company to contribute to innovation.

The people I work with are highly skilled and professional, but they’re just people. Everyone’s friendly and passionate. If managers see enthusiasm in you, they push and inspire you to achieve the best you can.

How are you supported to work flexibly, and what do you like to do in your spare time?

Work is very flexible. When you are studying for exams everyone makes sure you leave on time, as they understand how important it is. The support you get is immense.

I’ve just completed the Deloitte Ride Across Britain, in aid of the OMF and a local charity. I also like playing guitar and cycling.
