Megan McGowan - A BrightStart in tax

Megan wanted to get a BrightStart in the tax sector, after realising University wasn't the right option for her. Now she is constantly learning new and exciting skills to help her progress her career further.

How did you join Deloitte?

I originally went to university, but I shortly discovered that this path wasn’t for me. In August 2018, I joined the Deloitte BrightStart scheme and discovered my calling.

What are you responsible for in your role?

As an Analyst in Global Mobility Tax, my role involves working alongside companies with populations of internationally mobile employees. We work directly with both the individual and the corporate client to ensure the parties involved are tax compliant in each country they touch and to confirm all relevant taxes are filed.

What’s a typical day like for you?

As a tax analyst, every working day is different. Typically, you will find me working in the St Albans office, with regular ventures into the London office to catch up with the other half of my team. Regardless of location, my days are always packed with a variety of interesting and thought-provoking tasks. These include tax briefings with mobile individuals, internal and external meetings and drafting technical pieces of literature for clients.

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?

A memorable moment would definitely be the Tax Analyst Academy; a two-week residential for all new tax analysts from offices across the UK. I was able to meet lots of people who were in a similar position to me whilst developing my core technical and soft skills.

What’s the best part of your job and in what ways is your team innovative?

One of the best parts of my job is being able to work alongside and learn from such a talented, welcoming team. The skills and technical knowledge that I have learned from those around me is invaluable and something that I am truly grateful for.

Why would you recommend Deloitte to someone?

What I value so much about Deloitte is the investment it makes into every individual. I have received lots of invaluable support towards both my professional qualifications and personal development.

How are you supported to work flexibly?

Flexible working is a concept that is encouraged amongst all roles. I work from home a couple of times a month which enables me to manage my appointments and commitments.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love going on long walks with my little Labrador puppy, socialising with friends and exploring new cities around the world.
