Stephen Yates - Being reactive and natured in Tax

Stephen worked with us on a legal case at his last firm, and we saw his talents in full display that we headhunted him.

How did you join Deloitte?

At my former firm, we collaborated on a legal case with Deloitte. Shortly after, I was approached by the team to join.

What are you responsible for in your role?

I’m responsible for the supervision and management of high-profile tax disputes with HMRC.  The team is equipped to run full litigation cases at every level of the Courts and Tribunals system. Additionally, we advise clients on how to settle matters without litigation, typically through alternative dispute resolution.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I am currently in the build-up to two hearings in the summer, so my typical day involves strategy calls with the internal teams, leading tax barristers and clients. Separate to this ‘live’ work, we have several development projects for tax and legal issues that may impact Deloitte’s clients. I also attend weekly webinars and seminars on development in tax.

What is your most memorable moment on the job so far?

Deloitte held training courses with other Associate Directors at Deloitte University, in Brussels. This included lots of networking opportunities, leadership skills sessions and simulations of dealing with a difficult client meeting. This was a great example of the investment Deloitte makes in their employees.

What’s the best part of your job and in what ways is your team innovative?

The best part of my job is how my role is of a reactive nature, so I can be prepared for impromptu queries. These may result in either a quick and discrete answer, or it could end in a 5-year case.

Why would you recommend Deloitte to someone?

I was lucky to know my future team members before I joined, so I was able to connect with their personalities. They were a key reason I moved to Deloitte, and what sets it apart from their competitors.

How are you supported to work flexibly?

Deloitte is very open about agile working, so I will typically work one day a week from home.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a keen runner, and I also love to travel as much as possible in my spare time.
