Ben Holguin – Driving innovation with Deloitte Legal in Manchester

As we develop our legal services practice in the North, Associate Director, Ben plays a vital role in building a new team and keeping us ahead of the competition.

How did you join Deloitte and what are your responsibilities?

I joined Deloitte to help build a new team and to develop our legal services practice in the North. The application process was straightforward and, since joining, the reception from the other service lines has been fantastic.

As a corporate lawyer and Associate Director, I advise clients on various corporate legal matters, principally with regard to restructuring or refinancing corporate groups, buying and selling businesses and corporate governance matters. Business development is also a large part of my role.

There are a few things we focus on to keep us ahead of the competition and to make our service offerings more appealing to clients. For example, leveraging our innovative proprietary technology to improve our legal services.

What’s a typical day like for you?

A ‘typical day’ doesn’t really exist, but it’s usually a mix of transactional work (I’ll typically have actions to complete on a small number of “live” transactions), business development, supervising junior team members and ensuring that the director/partner group are kept updated.

I also frequently travel to London and across the Northern regions and some projects have taken me to Europe and the US. Deloitte offices are generally located in the centre of cities which makes travelling to and from on public transport easy.

Why would you recommend Deloitte to someone?

I’d recommend Deloitte for its entrepreneurial mindset and its determination to positively differentiate its offerings from the competition. There’s a clear desire to be the market leaders in everything the Firm does, including Legal Services. Deloitte has set out an ambitious growth strategy for Legal Services and it’s exciting to be involved in it from an early stage.

How are you supported to work flexibly, and what do you like to do in your spare time?

The firm encourages flexible working. Provided my team knows where I am, I’m free to work where I choose (within reason!). I regularly travel between our Regional offices and our London office, and I occasionally work from home. The flexible working policy and personal autonomy are big plusses for me.

I have two children who occupy most of my spare time, but I enjoy going to the gym, running, play golf and photography.
