Diane on motherhood and a completely new career direction

Completely changing your career during lockdown, while juggling the demands of single parenthood, sounds pretty daunting to anyone. Diane explains how she loves her role and why Deloitte is a great fit for people like her.

After a 20-year career in marketing, why Deloitte?

I was looking for something completely different; I had worked in digital and web for over 10 years and was eager to move away from the sector. My cousin works for Deloitte and when she told me about the Business Operations Lead role, so I did some research on the firm and learned about Deloitte’s benefit options. My roles to date hadn’t offered training and development, pension plans, private healthcare or a flexible working environment and this role sounded like a great transition for me - specifically using my transferable management skills and I am passionate about learning something new.

Did you have any concerns about making such a big change?

As a single mum of one, I had a few concerns; extensive travel and working onsite for clients, late nights and working over weekends just weren’t things I could commit to. I was also worried about moving into a new career at 40 years of age and how working for a big firm, I might just become another number. I was honest during both my interviews about my concerns and explained my personal circumstances and since then my managers have been true to their word about understanding my personal limitations and never trying to encroach on family time.

Starting a new job in lockdown must have been tough. How did you find it?

It was a challenge, but Deloitte has been outstanding. From mentorships, buddy check-ins and ongoing team care, I felt completely supported and trusted in my role. I’ve now been at Deloitte for over six months and can honestly say with confidence that I have made the right move. The most enjoyable part of my job has to be working with a fantastic team, Deloitte Cloud Engineering, Cloud Managed Services, who have been named the number one leader in the market, and I can see why; the whole team is so passionate about providing world-class services.

Other than your team, what’s the best part of your job?

I have been given the opportunity to take this role and make it mine – something I am thoroughly enjoying. From a professional point of view, I feel confident, valued and trusted and I know there’s always someone to talk to if I need advice in solving a problem. From a personal point of view, I know I’m providing a more secure future for my daughter and I’m delighted to be a positive role model for her.

What advice would you give someone considering a career change?

I would say, ‘go for it’. Make sure you do your research and discuss what you want from the role with the team leaders. Don’t let the fear of working for a big company or ‘starting out again’ later in life stop youI am so thankful I made the move and took a chance on something new.
