We can all think of someone who’s helped us get to where we are.
Whether it be a friend, a family member, a mentor, a teacher at school – there’s always that someone.
It may be that they raised your aspirations or helped you develop new skills. Perhaps they gave you confidence and made you believe in yourself, or maybe they gave you a different way to think about your future.
Whatever they did, that someone helped set you on the way and whatever you go on to do, you’ll always have that connection with them.
When One Million Futures launched in 2016, the programme set out to be ‘that someone’ for one million people across the UK. The someone who helped individuals realise their potential, chase their dreams and, ultimately, get to where they want to be.
In partnership with inspiring schools, charities and social enterprises across the country, this milestone has now officially been reached. One Million Futures has impacted one million people. That’s one million people with a brighter future today, one million stories, and one million reasons to celebrate.
One Million Futures, part of the Deloitte WorldClass ambition
In 2016, One Million Futures was launched as the firm’s new responsible business strategy with the goal of helping one million people through access to education and employment. Part of the global WorldClass ambition to help 50 million people by 2030, Deloitte UK’s One Million Futures exemplifies the firm’s purpose in action: to make an impact that matters.
Why this goal?
As the Fourth Industrial Revolution advances, globally, millions of people are being left behind, unable to fulfil their aspirations and potential. They lack the education, skills and training needed to succeed in this rapidly changing economy. With the financial impact of COVID-19 already negatively impacting employment figures, never has this topic been more relevant. One Million Futures focused on helping individuals overcome barriers to education and employment, empowering one million people to get to where they want to be.
One million is a big number. An ambitious goal. And the firm set out just five years to achieve it.
One million stories
Fast forward four years and now this goal has been reached and one million people have been positively impacted - ahead of schedule.
From the classroom to the boardroom, One Million Futures has helped people from different backgrounds all across the UK by raising aspirations, improving skills and developing leaders.
Some people have been helped directly through initiatives including mentoring programmes in schools and the firm’s transition labs. Others have been helped in partnership with 70+ of the most inspiring charities, schools and social enterprises, who support people all across the country. All have one thing in common: they now have a brighter future ahead.
Though reaching this milestone is an achievement to be proud of – Deloitte isn’t the hero of this story. The heroes are the one million people who have in some way been shaped by this programme. The one million people empowered to chase their dreams and reach their potential.
So, in honour of this, it’s their stories that need to be told. We’ve put together a series of videos that do just this.
Five stories, five bright futures
Akira, Moses, Russell, Solomon and Tracey have different stories. They started in different places and all had different goals. But the thing they have in common is that they are now on their way to where they want to be, each impacted by One Million Futures.
Watch for a powerful reminder that no matter where you start, and wherever you want to go, we all have hopes and aspirations for the future and that sometimes a helping hand can make all the difference.
Once you’ve watched, be sure to visit www.deloitte.co.uk/futures to enjoy short films about each of them, showing their journey to where they are now – the dreams and the doubts, the challenges and the moments they felt proud of themselves.
One million thank yous
Achieving a goal, and making an impact, as big as this takes a lot of hard work from a lot of people. So a massive THANK YOU is due to everyone who has been involved in One Million Futures.
This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our inspiring charity, school and social enterprise partners. These organisations work tirelessly to provide a wide range of support to millions of individuals every day across the UK.
Countless individuals and volunteers within the firm have given their time and contributed great efforts to this programme. This support has been essential to making this impact.
Thank you all.
It doesn’t stop here
The last few months have shown there is an increasing need and desire for business to make a positive difference in the communities we operate. And achieving this milestone has only reinforced our commitment to do so.
Whether it’s helping people navigate the post-pandemic landscape or creating an inclusive society and work environment, we’ll play our part to remove barriers and help people to get to where they want to be.
In true Deloitte fashion, another ambitious target will be set as part of the WorldClass 50 Million Futures global commitment. There will be more to come on this exciting plan soon, but now is a moment to reflect and celebrate the one million people who are now on their way to where they want to be.
