To celebrate Deloitte’s 15 years of partnership with Teach First, we’re sharing the experiences of individuals who have been involved in shaping or impacted by the work we have done together. A lot has changed in the education system in that time yet our partnership has remained focused on the same goal – to help make education fair for all young people.
Lakiesha Maxey is proof that working with young people can reap rewards. A former pupil at John Madejski Academy in Reading, she joined the firm as an apprentice after she was motivated by a careers visit to her school – one of our Teach First partner schools as part of Deloitte’s 5 Million Futures (5MF) programme. Now, a volunteer herself, she manages our partnership with the school she once attended.
Here, Lakiesha tells us how her Teach First story has come full circle…
Deloitte had a big impact
When I was at John Madejski Academy, Deloitte volunteers came in to speak to us about the firm’s apprenticeship scheme, graduate routes and work experience opportunities. They were great – the advice and support they gave hadn’t been available to us before. I got talking to the relationship manager afterwards and thought, ‘Do you know what? This is something I want to do.’
I spoke to our careers advisor at school, got some work experience at Deloitte and loved the company values, so applied for the apprenticeship scheme. The rest is history.
Without the support of those volunteers, I would probably have gone to university, which is definitely not what I wanted to do. They had a big impact on my life and I’ll be forever grateful.
I love giving back
I’ve been part of our volunteering programme since I joined Deloitte and I took on the role of relationship lead in Reading two years ago. It’s been amazing to be involved in something so positive, I love giving back to the community.
Our volunteers work closely with John Madejski Academy – a Teach First school, through our 5 Million Futures initiative and have taken part in things like CV workshops, mock interviews and careers fairs. We’ve recently set up a mentoring programme – the first in Reading – and the school is very excited about it.
We’ve had such great feedback from the headteacher and even some of the students have emailed us to say thank you. It’s a nice feeling. You’re happy knowing that you’re giving them advice and support they need and that you’re making a difference.
I’m passionate about volunteering and it was something I really valued about Deloitte. Having been on the other side, I know how much it can mean to someone’s life.
