Mum, I’m a pod-star

Hello 2021. We’re back. We’re getting ready to launch season 4 of The Green Room next week, and getting into some juicy questions about the world around us. Here’s a sneak peek of our first episode of the year. We also shine a spotlight on our fabulous hosts.

Well hello there, podcast fans. We’ve missed you too. We had a lovely break, thanks. Even forgot we produced a podcast at work. Then we returned to work and remember how much we love working on it. It’s good to be back.

Our 2021 resolution? Apart from losing the extra weight from all those mince pies, it’s to continue having great conversations and bringing you fascinating guests.

It’s looking like another fantastic season and we can’t wait for you to join us. First up, we talk about money and fair access to finance with a special guest from The Big Exchange.

But first, we wanted to shine a spotlight on our fabulous hosts, the voices of The Green Room who make it all happen.

Host with the most

Every good podcast needs a good host. Or, in our case, a team of good hosts.

Two years ago, when we were getting ready to launch The Green Room, we invited colleagues to apply to be our hosts. It was a tough decision, but a few audition rounds later, we welcomed George, Lizzie and Ethan to our pod squad.

After hosting nearly 30 (!) episodes, we thought we’d share a bit more about the stars of the show.

George Parrett

George is The Green Room's anchor, which means he brings his dulcet tones (and his dad jokes) to pretty much every episode. But don't worry, one of our rotating co-hosts keep him in check…

My job in a nutshell: I work in the firm's External Relations team, doing my bit to protect and enhance Deloitte’s reputation. I spend most of the time chatting to journalists about all the things that world of technology and digital, which includes everything from developments in legal tech to cybersecurity trends and even how the firm is working with start-ups in the space technology scene.

When I'm not working I can be found... in wellies stomping around the woods with the family

When not listening to The Green Room, I like… listening to all sorts of different podcasts and playlists. My top song of 2020 on Spotify was JaJa Ding Dong from the Eurovision film – make of that what you will…!

Favourite person: It’s never a dull moment with my two daughters – aged 5½ and 1½

What do you enjoy most about being a podcast host? I absolutely love meeting and speaking to the enormous variety of guests that come on the show. It’s hard not to marvel at the enthusiasm and passion that is so apparent when experts are talking about issues close to their hearts. It’s such a privilege to be in the position I’m in.

What's your New Year’s resolution? I think venturing out more will be everyone’s resolution for 2021! That might be out of our hands, so I’ll also say getting back into sailing and being in the same room as Ethan and Lizzie again!

Lizzie Elston

Lizzie was born to be a pod-star. She recorded and launched her first imaginary radio station aged ten. All those years later, she continues to impress us with her quick wit and natural curiosity.

My job in a nutshell: I lead the South East Clients & Industries team – we work with the fabulous partners and people in our regional offices to drive our go to market strategy and focus on building long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships with clients

When I'm not working I can be found... Hanging out with my husband and our eight-year-old son – playing with our new puppy, building Lego, going for walks and bike rides, and catching up (currently outside and at a distance!) with friends

When not listening to The Green Room, I like to devour British Comedy boxsets – I’m currently working my way through The Royle Family – so funny and totally inventive at the time

Favourite person: Only one? It has to be my amazing son. Outside of family it's a tie between Julie Andrews (The Sound of Music remains my favourite film of all time) and Noel Fitzpatrick, The Supervet!

What do you enjoy most about being a podcast host? There’s so much I love about it – working with the amazing pod squad, meeting fascinating and inspiring guests, learning about subjects I previously knew little to nothing about, the laughs we have during recordings (which occasionally have to be edited out…!) and last but not least it’s seeing my son’s face light up when I play the latest recording – he’s convinced his mum is famous!

What's your New Year’s resolution? Giving up alcohol – although only for the month of January! I did it last year and felt great

Ethan Worth

Ethan is our youngest and most enthusiastic pod-star. Like Lizzie, his career started early with a stint rapping on the radio age nine. A seasoned podcast listener, he makes a pretty great host too.

My job in a nutshell: I consult in Organisation Transformation & Talent in the public sector, so basically anything from supporting the government with post-Brexit logistical challenges to project managing a new strategy for increasing blood donations.

When I'm not working I can be found… I like to think I can be found learning a new skill or embarking on my next adventure, but in reality I'm most likely watching Netflix (which over the last few months has actually been quite responsible)

When not listening to The Green Room, I like… The Guardian Football Weekly, where the overly upbeat ex-presenter of soccer Saturday and a grumpy Irishman break down the week’s footballing news from both on and off the pitch

Favourite person: I aspire to be Richard Osman – fans of the podcast will know that I love a quiz so what better job than creating and hosting gameshows (he’s also admirably tall!)

What do you enjoy most about being a podcast host? I like delving into a topic that I otherwise wouldn’t have – the briefing packs for the show are filled with a whole range of material I would never normally come across. I also love the opportunity to talk to, learn from and joke with various leaders in their field. The occasional fancy awards ceremony is a nice unexpected perk too!

What's your New Year’s resolution? More quizzing – if there’s one thing I miss from early lockdown days it’s the virtual quiz boom…
