Deloitte Parasport inspires ParalympicsGB athlete

Paralympian Sophie Hahn found her local club through Deloitte Parasport

In September 2016, 19-year old track athlete Sophie Hahn made her Paralympic Games debut. Sophie, who has cerebral palsy, was inspired to take up sport after watching the London 2012 Paralympic Games. In their search for a local athletics club, Sophie’s family used Deloitte Parasport - our online platform that acts as a signpost for disabled people to find a club or sport that matches their abilities and interests.

The Deloitte Parasport website is one of the success stories of our work with the British Paralympic Association over the past nine years. We are helping to make the organisation sustainable in the long term, inspiring more disabled people to take up sport. Deloitte Parasport now has over 2,600 clubs registered across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, attracting 8,000 unique users per month looking to become involved in sport. The platform also has strong links with the NHS to offer people support with rehabilitation.

Whilst the platform is principally a tool for grassroots level sport, Sophie’s journey from her first competitive race in 2013 to representing Great Britain at the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio, shows Deloitte Parasport is also having success at the elite level. Sophie broke onto the British sprinting scene in June 2013 by taking first place at the England Athletics Senior Disability Championships, winning both 100 metres and the 200 metres.

She went on to win the IPC World Championship in 2013 for the 100 metres T38. At the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships Sophie took Gold in the 100 metres (T38). She is the World Record holder in both the 100 metres (T38) and part of the team that hold the WR in 4x100m (T35-38) relay.

We hope that Sophie’s story and our Paralympic athletes in Rio will inspire more disabled people to take up sport. After London 2012 and in the wake of ParalmypicsGB’s success in the games, traffic to the Deloitte Parasport website increased by over 2,000 per cent.
