Giving something back: Clare’s story
Clare Johnson describes how getting involved in Deloitte’s responsible business programmes has made an impact on her local community
" I have been involved in Deloitte’s various responsible business programmes since 2015, when I began volunteering as a mentor through the Deloitte Access programme. I worked with mentees on revision techniques, presentation skills and work experience opportunities and was delighted to see a significant improvement in the students’ confidence and interest in their future careers.
This experience inspired me to volunteer as a coach on the Micro-Tyco challenge, where I have again been amazed by the impact the challenge has had on the students. Between them, the students I coached generated some exciting ideas and raised £1,587 in one month as part of the challenge. Two teams (ten pupils) from the school have also now won places on the Deloitte ASPIRE work experience programme in June.
As well as working on Micro-Tyco, I’ve been supporting WildHearts, the charity behind Micro-Tyco, as part of our Social Innovation Pioneers programme, helping improve its website and develop its expansion strategy.
I’m also the relationship manager for Maria Fidelis School, which involves overseeing and developing the various programmes we run for the school. The programmes are tailored to the school’s needs and, last academic year, a large number of volunteers from our Financial Advisory business supported nearly 700 students through activities including a financial awareness workshop, an employability skills day, mentoring and more.
My participation in these programmes has been a refreshing and exciting addition to my day-to-day role. I have been given a real opportunity to further develop my business and relationship management skills in a different setting, while also being able to give something back to society."
