Life at Deloitte
Alasdair works in Corporate Audit and is based in our Birmingham office.
Please tell us your full name, grade, service line & service area/business unit, and your tenure with Deloitte
Alasdair Townsend, R2, Corporate Services Audit, Birmingham. I joined in September 2014
What have been some the highlights of your time with Deloitte? What excites you about your work and the opportunities you see for yourself in the firm?
In July 2015 I went to Daytona Beach, Florida for two weeks for an Audit, which allowed me to experience the differences that my role can have around the world. Year group meals and training courses are also fun as it’s nice to be around the group I joined with and catch up with people that you haven’t seen often and in different departments. I enjoy working on clients in niche markets as you learn so much about products and services that you never knew existed before and that have such a pivotal role in the modern world, I’ve worked on things ranging from Pharmaceuticals to building materials and bespoke bathtubs.
I see myself qualifying and considering broadening my experience in the firm, whether that be on a secondment or a change in departments.
Of course you’re earning as well as learning, what has that money enabled you to do?
I am starting to save towards a flat/house and have been on a few holidays so far this year!
Do you get together with other BrightStarts outside work? If so, what do you all get up to?
I live with one other BrightStart so we occasionally go on nights out and to the city centre etc. I also often meet up with the graduates and do the same sort of things.
How do you feel you’ve grown since joining the BrightStart programme? And what have been your greatest achievements?
On a personal note I have gained in confidence and matured as an individual. As a result I started to understand more complex areas of the financial statements and had exposure to areas that are not regularly tested in the first year, which has allowed me to begin to define my career so early after leaving school.
What have you enjoyed most in the time you’ve been here? And what’s the next milestone you’re working towards/career aspirations?
Working with high profile clients and with such a varied workforce. My next milestone is completing the CFAB level of the ACA qualification and becoming part qualified.
Working with Deloitte is all about ‘making an impact that matters’. How do you feel you’ve been able to do that?
Alongside work I took part in the MicroTyco challenge to help fund micro loans in the third world. I then had the opportunity to coach teams taking part, although sadly the team I was coaching pulled out during the challenge, participating came as part of my induction process however coaching came to my attention a few months later when the team leading our challenge asked for volunteers.
