Life at Deloitte

Amy Wallace

Associate, Tax Consulting - Global Employer Services

I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2013 after studying BSc Mathematics and joined Deloitte after learning more about the firm at a University career event. I was impressed by how supportive the firm were during the recruitment process and knew I had made the right decision when I accepted my offer to join. I now work in the Global Employer Services practise which specialises in ensuring companies are aware of the tax implications of sending employees on international assignments.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

It’s difficult to say what I get involved in on a day to day basis as my work is so varied. Initially I prepared a lot of tax returns for globally mobile individuals but now that my first compliance season is over I am involved in a variety of interesting projects, as well as completing take-on tasks for new clients and attending client meetings. I will soon be studying for the ATT qualification at college which I am very much looking forward to as it will enable me to build on the technical knowledge I have learnt in the office.

What do you like most about the office and region that you work in?

Deloitte’s Reading office has one of the largest Global Employer Services teams which is fantastic as I get to work with different people every day. There are also a number of social and sporting events to get too so life is never boring! I was recently part of the winning team in an Apprentice-style challenge which was a lot of fun and I would encourage any new joiners to get involved in as many social activities as possible.

What social, society and corporate responsibility activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

Since joining Deloitte I have been involved in a number of graduate recruitment events as I am passionate about encouraging others to apply to the firm. I also attended a business skills day for local students and hope to get involved in one of the many charity events that are organised each year.

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?

Deloitte offers everything I am looking for in terms of career progression and has given me the opportunity to work for a highly successful global firm. From training courses to overseas secondments, there are a number of development opportunities to utilise and I know that Deloitte will support my future career goals. I regularly meet with my performance manager and have clear objectives so I can monitor my progress and develop within my role.

What advice would you share to others considering a career in your industry?

My advice would be to apply for Deloitte’s Summer Vacation Scheme to truly understand the role you are applying for. I did not participate in this scheme myself but if I’d known how interesting my role would be and how friendly my colleagues are I would have been less apprehensive in the months leading up to joining.
