Life at Deloitte
Armed Forces community
Our military community is an active and enthusiastic group of over 160 staff. The community is made up of ex- military staff, staff with friends and family in the military and others who support military charities or who like sociable events with good speakers. The bigger and more diverse our community, the better.
Our first ever community event saw us welcome Rory Underwood as the guest speaker, a former RAF fast jet pilot and England rugby winger. Now a very successful management consultant, he spoke about transferrable skills from the military to the world of business and of course provided lots of great stories and anecdotes. Other inspiring speakers have been individuals such as Jaco Van Gass; badly injured in Afghanistan, Jaco has since gone onto complete some amazing challenges including summiting an 8000m peak, attempting Everest and reaching the North Pole with the Walking with the Wounded North Pole Challenge team.
Our most recent get-together saw a small contingent from Deloitte’s military community travel down to Richmond in SW London to visit the Poppy Factory, the supplier that for nearly 100 years has been making Remembrance poppies for The Royal British Legion. After a very warm welcome and informative talk about the history of the charity, we met with a number of the factory workforce of disabled veterans and their dependents, and had the chance to make our very own poppies in time for this year’s Remembrance Sunday.
The Poppy Factory ‘is the country’s leading employment charity for veterans with health conditions or impairments’ and further information can be found on The Poppy Factory website.
Our next upcoming event is a joint affair with Deloitte’s LGBT Network and is themed Transition and Change: A discussion with RAF pilot Ayla Holdom and special guests. Ayla is an RAF pilot who, during her gender transition, found support in an environment where she was judged primarily on her professional skills and on her contribution to the organisation. At this event, Ayla will outline the challenges she faced, and look forward to a future where being trans is accepted as just another part of her identity. Ayla will be joined by a distinguished panel from the British Armed Forces, UK Government, Deloitte and IBM.
The community group is a great way for people with a shared interest in supporting the military community, to network, socialise and support each other. We are always keen to welcome new members.
Global military veteran programmes
Our US member firm is also very active in its approach towards ex-military recruitment and has a substantial and very successful military veteran programme. Both firms continue to work closely together and seek to share best practice in this important employment space.
