Life at Deloitte

Elizabeth Gutteridge

Partner, Deloitte Forensic, London office

I never actually applied to Deloitte, but I do enjoy working here! I graduated in 1993 from Christ’s College, Cambridge University, wondering quite how my degree in Modern and Medieval Languages was going to be relevant to the world of work. Roll forward several years and as a newly qualified Chartered Accountant, I decided to accept a role with Arthur Andersen, London.

This provided the opportunity for me to live and work in Zurich, using my French and German language skills as well as my accounting experience. Although I was working on a Forensic investigation within the Swiss banking system, both my German and my skiing improved significantly! Returning to the UK, I built on this Forensic experience and worked on a range of litigation support projects, supporting experts testifying in Court.I was hooked.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?
I work with companies and their lawyers who find themselves in contentious situations with competitors and regulators. I enjoy working as a team to help bring such disputes to a resolution.

What do you like most about the office and region that you work in?
London as a centre for dispute resolution is second to none – we are fortunate to work with Magic Circle lawyers representing the firm’s largest clients on engagements which really matter to them.

What is your top tip for working in your industry?
Pride yourself on your responsiveness, take responsibility and remember that details matter.

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?
The structure of the firm’s hierarchy has always appealed to me – with experience and new roles come new opportunities and new responsibilities.

What advice would you share to others considering a career in your industry?

A common misconception about the word forensic is that it's about white coats, scientists, or an episode of CSI. In fact, forensic means anything to do with the court. And that's the aspect that defines our work here – we are always mindful that our work could end up in court, so it’s about attention to detail and a determination to uncover the full picture.
