Life at Deloitte

Inspiring the next generation of female technologists

Women in technology

On Friday 25 September 2015, Deloitte’s Women in Technology network welcomed female employees, clients and students for a day of hacking and rapid prototyping, inspiring today’s rising stars and future generations of girls to develop careers in technology.

With women making up just 16% of IT professionals, Deloitte’s Women in Technology network hosts events and activities throughout the year to attract more women to develop careers in the industry.

Hosted at the Deloitte Digital offices in Clerkenwell, our first all-female hackathon brought together five teams of women made up of representatives from Deloitte, our clients, and students to use their creative and programming skills to compete in designing and building prototype products that would encourage women and girls to pursue careers in technology – a big ask in just one day!

The hackathon culminated in the teams presenting their products to an esteemed industry panel of judges (including Deloitte’s Louise Brett, Sonia Nikolova, and Ed Greig and Google’s Aly Pitts), and participating in a Q&A on their idea.

As the suspense built, the panel returned after careful deliberation to announce SmartPet as the winners! This product is based on looking after a pet: to keep the pet happy, children of six to eight years old would need to pass coding challenges like logic and problem solving. In the future, the development team saw this app developing by increasing the difficulty and complexity of the code challenges as the child’s skills grow and develop.

Whilst there had to be a winner, massive congratulations and hats off to everyone who participated in the event – five fantastic ideas were created in just a day. New connections and networks were built. New skills and increased confidence gained. We are already being asked when the next one will take place!
