Life at Deloitte

Jay Abdulai

Senior Consultant, Enterprise Applications - SAP

I’m a Senior Consultant in Deloitte’s Enterprise Applications (EA) practice where we design and build cutting edge applications that help our clients achieve their goals. I specialise in supply chain and procurement technology and my role allows me to use my understanding of technology applications to advise businesses on the best way to leverage enterprise applications.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?
I start most days with a project status meeting then I could be in workshops with clients trying to understand their challenges, working with the Deloitte team to build innovative solutions or presenting those solutions to clients and helping them understand how each option can help them meet their goals. Each engagement is different and presents new challenges and opportunities to be creative.

What do you value about working for Deloitte?
Deloitte is a fantastic place to work, I value the opportunity the firm gives me to work on interesting and challenging projects. My clients trust me to make a valued contribution to their business, and at Deloitte I have the tools and resources to exceed their expectations.

Why did you choose Deloitte?
I chose to work at the firm because Deloitte is a globally recognised brand that suggest excellence and since I joined I’ve found this to be more than true. The Firm has a great culture that inspires you to go the extra mile. Everyone is pulling in the same direction sharing ideas and always improving what we do and how we do it, it’s great!

What do you like most about the office and region that you work in?
I’m based at Deloitte’s offices in the City of London. There’s so much to do in London, Deloitte sponsor a variety of organisations like the Royal Opera House and the National Portrait Gallery. The firm was also the official professional services provider to London 2012 Olympic Games and a few of my colleagues got a chance to help plan the games and even got to meet some athletes. Our offices are very close to St Paul’s Cathedral and I can enjoy its beautiful architecture whenever I’m working at the office.

What qualities do you think make a good Deloitte consultant?
I’d attribute a great part of my success at Deloitte to being adaptable. My clients operate in a dynamic environment and their circumstances are always changing. To be successful you must be able to react to changing winds and adjust your sails to help clients reach their objectives.

Talk us through the most exciting project that you have worked on
I try to have as much fun as possible on all of my engagements. On a recent project I had the opportunity to travel to a few different countries and work with the local teams. It was really interesting to work with people in Tokyo, Istanbul and Dubai and experience different cultures. It was a challenging project and we were all working really hard but we made time for fun.

What social, society and corporate responsibility activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?
I’m a mentor on the Deloitte Leadership Mentoring Programme (DLMP). We work with undergraduates from ethnic minority backgrounds and provide them with guidance and support as they make their career decisions for the future. It’s a fantastic programme, I’ve had some great mentors through my career so I know how valuable the right advice can be.

How do people at Deloitte support your career?
The leadership at Deloitte really care about personal development and training. Everyone at the firm is encouraged to develop a personal training plan in line with their career aspirations. I’m always impressed by the number of training course available internally and where there’s a need for external training providers we always get the best people in. As an advisor I need to keep my skills up to date and Deloitte’s training and development infrastructure makes it easy to do.

What advice would you share to others considering a career in EA?

In EA we are passionate about how enterprise technology enables business and are in a strong position to help shape the future of technology enabled businesses.
