Risk and Regulation

Your personal and professional development is critical to mutual success. Working with colleagues at the very peak of their profession, the opportunity for varied work experience is vast. With your input, the department will continue to return excellent results and be regarded as the benchmark of success for other service lines within the firm.

You’ll begin your Risk & Regulation career with a three year training programme to develop consultancy skills and your technical knowledge of the financial services industry. You’ll receive a mix of technical study/training, skills development and varied work experience. The ultimate aim of the programme is to ensure that everyone who joins the practice develops the necessary skills and expertise to become highly-qualified regulatory professionals.

Your career starts with a three-day induction course, introducing you to the firm and the practices within R&R. During this time and for the next few months, you’ll be able to discuss your training route with a training manager, your appointed mentor and other members of the R&R. To a great extent, you’ll have the flexibility to choose your own training route, booking yourself on external and internal courses and addressing any areas for development.

All new graduate joiners (R&R) are required to sit and pass the Regulation & Compliance module of the Securities & Investment Institute (SII) Diploma or to become CFP (Certificate in Financial Planning) qualified (this is dependent upon the technical knowledge needed in the department).

Apart from the mandatory external qualifications, R&R staff are given the opportunity to take on any qualification that aligns to their career within the department. Examples of other courses are other modules from the Securities & Investment Institute (SII) Diploma, Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning, Anti-money laundering Diploma, Certificate in Mortgage Advice and FRM (Financial Risk Management). Analysts can opt to study other qualifications if they can supply a business case to the partners showing the benefit to the department.

Operations Management graduates, in addition to the qualifications above, encourages all new recruits to undertake externally accredited project management training. Project management is the teams core skill and we actively support staff in achieving PRINCE2 accreditation, which is the UK’s de facto standard for managing projects. The qualification introduces and explains a process based approach to project management.

We have an internal training department offering a variety of courses in technical skills, professional competencies, technology and industry knowledge.

You can decide which course to book yourself on, usually after consultation with your mentor and appraiser. Examples of courses commonly attended by Financial Services Advisory staff are project management, presentation skills, business writing and IT courses.

As well as these formal training sessions, there are other forums for staff to increase their knowledge. For example, there are regular analyst and R&R meetings in which current issues, projects and staff matters can be discussed.

The department also has a client seminar programme, with speakers addressing a range of the year’s regulatory hot topics.

Our appraisal process is second to none. You’ll have the opportunity to meet with senior members of staff to discuss your development, and plan the route you want your career to take. We firmly believe that the competencies you acquire at an analyst level will be continually reinforced, deepened and expanded as you progress through your career with R&R.
