Life at Deloitte

Lili Jones

Assistant Manager, Restructuring Services, London

I studied MORSE at Warwick University. I work within Restructuring Services advising financially distressed businesses and their lenders and stakeholders. I chose RS due to the advisory nature of the work whilst also enabling me to study towards the ACA. I applied to Deloitte due its strong reputation and global size – it offers the opportunity to work for clients in a range of industries as well as the potential for overseas work.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

My experience has predominantly been in advisory projects which involves performing financial analysis on the company and creating a report to discuss with the client (for example, the lender to the distressed company). I enjoy the mix between getting involved in the financial detail whilst also drafting reports and having direct contact with the client.

What do you like most about the office and region that you work in?

London is a great city to work in - there is so much to do at lunch times, evenings and weekends. I enjoy the variety of food, bars and entertainment. The London offices are modern and a good location in the city.

What is your top tip for working in your industry?

Be enthusiastic to gain a broad variety of experience on different types of projects and sectors within your department. Working in different teams is great as you can pick up your colleague’s unique skills and styles of work.

What social, society and corporate responsibility activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

I am in the Restructuring Services netball team – we play every Thursday lunch time which is very fun. I have also taken part in the mentoring scheme, providing advice to two sixth form students at a college in London regarding their applications to university.

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?

My relationship with me appraiser has helped me to assess different career goals and decide what I want to achieve long term. There is a great support network to help you realise your own strengths and what areas you need to work on.

What advice would you share to others considering a career in your industry?

Take time to research the variety of roles within Deloitte. If you decide you want to get a certain qualification (e.g. the ACA), make sure you look at the different options available to you, both within and outside of Corporate Finance. Try to think about what you might want to do longer term as well since the experience you get during your graduate contract can open different doors to future career options.
