Life at Deloitte
Maria Powell works in Tax and is based in our London office.
Please tell us your full name, grade, service line & service area/business unit, and your tenure with Deloitte
Maria Powell, Tax – GES. I’ve been with the firm since 2013
What came as the biggest surprise when you made the move from education to the world of work?
How nice everyone was – no one was unapproachable and everyone was completely supportive of the fact that I was new and knew nothing. The organisation itself was quite overwhelming - I don’t think I knew quite how big it was until I joined!
Describe a typical day or week in your current role from the time you get up to the time you get home
Typical day – Get up at 6am and go to the gym. I’ll be in the office at around 9am. When I get in I will look at my emails and organise myself for the day. The day will depend on what projects are going on at the time but will often be spent drafting papers for people to review, organising calls and meetings, and keeping on top of the administration for our engagements. As well as client work I also get involved in a lot of business development to help the firm grow. I will usually leave the office around 7pm and go out with friends / watch some television.
How do you structure your time working and studying?
I find it useful to revise in the mornings before work so I would come in early each day. I also revised at weekends. People at work are aware that you have exams so are supportive in terms of your workload.
Describe your work environment. Are you office based or do you move around and spend time working on site with clients?
I am office based for the majority of the time but have spent time working with clients.
What have been some the highlights of your time with Deloitte? What excites you about your work and the opportunities you see for yourself in the firm?
I recently got back from participating in the Charity Challenge in Borneo. I met some incredible people and we helped to raise £1m for our national charity partners – amazing! I find it surreal that at 20 years old, I’ve sat in meetings with CFO’s of some of the world’s biggest banks. When I joined I had no idea just how much of a big deal Deloitte is.
I have no idea where I’ll be in 5 years, but I do know that Deloitte has opened many doors for me and opened my eyes to what I can achieve.
