Life at Deloitte

Ellie Day

Manager, Human Resources

Ellie joined Deloitte in November 2012 and is an HR Project Manager in our People Solutions team, and lives in Bristol. Prior to Deloitte, Ellie was an Army Reservist while at university, followed by regular Army service up to 2004.

What were your reasons for leaving the military and why did you join Deloitte?

I joined Deloitte due to its reputation, its focus on talent, corporate social responsibility and the continuous learning and development opportunities it can offer.

What transferable skills and experience have you brought from the military?

I have found my communication skills, project management and the ability to multi task, adapt and work under pressure invaluable when working within professional services. My passion and ability to collaborate with people at all levels while using all available resources, including a valuable cross-firm network, enable me to innovate, influence and deliver within my HR role and the wider Military Talent and Transition Programme.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

On a daily basis I partner with our HR SME’s and senior leadership teams across the firm, managing and delivering people related projects – from TUPE’s to our new approach to employee engagement.

What was the biggest culture shock when you first started in professional services/Deloitte?

Although I already had corporate experience prior to Deloitte, the transition was a steep learning curve. The ability to recognise your individual strengths, drive your own learning and career, manage expectations and adapt communication skills I’ve found beneficial.

What do you like most about your role?

I find challenging work where I’m able to collaborate with a diverse group of people both internally and externally, while making a visible impact on our people’s experience is the most rewarding part of my role.

Tips for joining Deloitte with the right mind set

Ensure you have a ‘can-do’ attitude, be adaptable and ‘own’ your career.

What is your role within the Deloitte Military Talent and Transition Programme

I support the programme through managing internal comms to our internal armed forces community. I also support and present at our quarterly insight days to around 80 external attendees, providing CV and career guidance to those looking to transition out of the Armed Forces, and linking individuals with other Deloitte employees to give further guidance on specific areas of the firm that they may be interested in developing a career in.
