Life at Deloitte

Ellie Day

HR Advisor, Tax

Ellie joined Deloitte in November 2012 and is an HR Business Partner (HR Manager) supporting our Tax team nationally, although based in Reading, Berkshire. Having been an Army 6th Form Scholar and University Bursar, Ellie was unfortunately medically discharged in 2003 following both Regular and Reserve Service. Ellie maintains close links with Help for Heroes and Career Recovery Services, while coordinating work placements for other Wounded, Injured & Sick service personnel in support of their transition.

What were your reasons for leaving the military and why did you join Deloitte?

I was unfortunately medically discharged in 2003 having served a total of 4 years TA and 4 years Regular service.

I joined Deloitte due to its reputation, its focus on Talent, corporate social responsibility and the opportunities it can offer.

What transferable skills and experience have you brought from the military?

I have found my interpersonal skills, project management skills and the ability to multi task, adapt and work under pressure invaluable when working within professional services.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

On a daily basis I partner with the Tax Partners managing employee relations issues, engagement, delivering talent management initiatives, managing performance and reward.

What was the biggest culture shock when you first started in professional services/Deloitte?

Although I already had corporate experience prior to Deloitte, the transition was a steep learning curve; the ability to manage expectations and adapt communication skills I’ve found rewarding.

What do you like most about your role?

I find working with a variety of people across different op units and being able to make a visible difference is the most rewarding part of my role.

Tips for joining Deloitte with the right mind set

Ensure you have a ‘can-do’ attitude  and be adaptable.

How do you deliver impact, leadership and innovation in your role?

I find that providing timely, accurate and well considered advice while being aware of the effect on the business allows me to have the most impact in my role.  By bringing in my varied experiences within the military and other industries and relating it to current issues I aim to bring innovative ideas and ways of resolving issues to the business.

What social, society and CSR activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

During a sabbatical immediately prior to joining Deloitte, I was a Help for Heroes volunteer at the “Tin Hut” in Tidworth, which led to a short stint as Assistant Project Manager during the renovations of Tedworth House, the first H4H Recovery Centre. I’m still an active volunteer for local events, ‘enjoy’ trying to train with their triathlon team, Team True Spirit and am a very lucky cricket player that appeared at the Oval in September 2015 against the World Champions, England Physical Disability Team!

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?

In the short time that I’ve been with Deloitte, I’ve had the opportunity to gain valuable experience in an HR Business Partner role, within a highly reputable organisation that truly values its people and talent; especially the skills and attributes that military personnel can bring to professional services.
