Jake Goss

Analyst, Consulting

Jake joined Deloitte in 2013 as an Analyst in our Consulting, Security team and studied International Relations at the University of Birmingham. This was following 18 months as a Flying Officer in the RAF.

What were you reasons for leaving the military and why did you join Deloitte?

Unfortunately I was made redundant due to cuts to the flying pipeline.  Deloitte offered a job with variety, challenges and great opportunities for career development.

What transferable skills and experience have you brought from the military?

In practical terms presentation skills, project management and communication are always useful on a day to day basis.  Also, in a more general sense, the work ethic and willingness to get stuck into a job has put me in great stead during projects.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

I joined on this year’s graduate intake so I initially spent 6 weeks in training, gaining an insight into what services Deloitte offers and how these can benefit our clients. I am currently assisting with a data leakage software implementation so I help respond to incidents, configure the software and communicate our findings to the client.

What was the biggest culture shock when you first started in professional services/Deloitte?

Although there is a management hierarchy, it is much less rigid than the RAF and the senior management are much more approachable.

What do you like most about your role?

The variety is great as it is such a large project and there are plenty of opportunities to pick which parts of the project I want to get involved in.

Tips for joining Deloitte with the right mind set

You need to have an open mind and be flexible in regard to the projects you are placed on.  It may be outside of your subject matter expertise but there are always new opportunities coming up in different sectors and areas.

How do you deliver impact, leadership and innovation in your role?

I’ve looked for ways to maximise my impact on the project from day one, from organising social events with the client to proactively looking to improve processes.

What social, society and CSR activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

There are always networking and social events going on.  While away on client site we have joined a local football league and try to keep the evenings busy by organising a variety of film, poker and quiz nights.

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?

Deloitte has made me aware of the opportunities available to improve my personal and technical skill set.  This will enable me to have positive impact on the projects I work on and give me a great platform to progress within the firm.
