Life at Deloitte

Lyn Webb

Senior Manager, Audit Advisory - Resilience

Lyn joined Deloitte in March 2014 as a Senior Manager in our Audit Advisory practice. She joins following 20 years as a Wing Commander and Aerospace Battle Manager in the RAF.

What were your reasons for leaving the military and why did you join Deloitte?

I had a great career in the RAF and faced many great challenges.  I felt ready to try something new and Deloitte offered me new challenges.

What transferable skills and experience have you brought from the military?

Project management, adaptability, communication

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

I am involved in every stage of the contract, from meeting potential clients to understand their requirements, compiling the bid, presenting the proposal and delivering the contract.

What was the biggest culture shock when you first started in professional services/Deloitte?

There is a much more flexible approach to working – we are all incredibly mobile and work from several locations.  It is not unusual to be on a conference call with people in numerous locations and time zones.  While there is a hierarchy, the chain of command is much more of a matrix.

What do you like most about your role?

The variety – it can be reviewing existing processes, designing new procedures or teaching clients how to set up their own resilience tool kits.

Tips for joining Deloitte with the right mind set

Be prepared to learn – you will be given basic training, but be humble and learn from those above you, and most important, those more junior than you.  Many people have grown up in the Firm, much like I did in the Military – they are the go to people when you need to learn the Deloitte way.

How do you deliver impact, leadership and innovation in your role?

The military invested a lot in my training and I am comfortable empowering those around me.  We are all encouraged to contribute and work as a team – by working collaboratively we can benefit from everyone’s skills.

What social, society and CSR activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

I’ve only been at Deloitte for a month, but have already been involved in the Military Network, which is huge!  I am also a member of the Women in Leadership group.

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?

My military skills have got me into this firm; Deloitte will give me room to grow.
