Life at Deloitte

Michelle Skinner

Assistant, Quality and Risk Operations

Michelle joined Deloitte as an Assistant in our Quality and Risk Operations after serving in the Royal Navy for 12 years.

What were your reasons for leaving the military and why did you join Deloitte?

I served in the Royal Navy for 12 years and wanted the opportunity to have another fantastic career, that didn’t involve me being deployable at the drop of a hat. I got to a point in my life where I wanted stability in terms of employment and location.

What transferable skills and experience have you brought from the military?

The most important skills are the dedication, hardworking, multitasking and team working skills, as well as the skills I obtained as a Petty Officer (Writer) in terms of administration, security, leadership and management

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

I work within Quality and Risk Operations, conducting Customer Due Diligence on new and existing clients to the firm ensuring that Anti Money Laundering Regulations are followed and any risks are prevented.

What was the biggest culture shock when you first started in professional services/Deloitte?

Starting again. It wasn’t just a new assignment where I knew the basics of my job and just needed to learn the ways of working in a new unit. I needed to start over, learn something new but also bring my previously acquired skills with me.

What do you like most about your role?

The pressure to meet tight deadlines, I like it when urgent work comes in and with a deadline and the team work involved to ensure that the end result is achieved whilst still having to consider all AML points as usual.

Tips for joining Deloitte with the right mind set

Retain your military professionalism, look smart and be willing to take on a challenge.

How do you deliver impact, leadership and innovation in your role?

By maintaining my high standards, working as a team and sharing my knowledge and experience of the job.

What social, society and CSR activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

I am a member of GLOBE (Deloitte’s LGBT Network) and attended London Pride with the firm this year. I have recently expressed wishes to start a local GLOBE network for the Cardiff region. This is still in progress.

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?

Deloitte has many similarities to the military in terms of learning, career progression and promotion. This provides good clear career ambition for me and the opportunity to be part of a huge global firm such as Deloitte is fantastic.
