Life at Deloitte

Neil Williams

Data Analysis & Reporting Assistant Manager, Shared Services Organisation

I’d been working in IT for 12 years before I joined Deloitte. I started as a contractor working alongside the IT Service Desk and became a permanent member of staff after 6 months. I’ve been here for 5 years now. My department provides the UK with a better insight into how our IT systems are being used and are performing, enabling our colleagues to make more informed business decisions. For instance we can generate reports on the number of calls to a service desk, what they were called for, how quickly queries were resolved etc. I enjoy the variety of the work as we apply the technology to problem solve in different ways so it is very rewarding. Every day presents a new challenge.

What attracted you to this role?

It was a newly created role so I had scope to explore the role and the opportunity to create a niche for myself. Deloitte knew what they wanted to achieve but were happy for me to decide how best to deliver the results.

What are you most proud of achieving?

I’m really proud of making the role a success. I guess my ‘can-do’ attitude meant that the word spread and my colleagues now rely on my team for data that helps them to make informed business decisions. The management team recognise that we add value to the business so they are willing to invest and grow our department.

Are you able to work in an agile way as part of your role?

Yes, absolutely. I work flexible hours and can work at home which means that I get to see my 1 year old son more often than if I was commuting to London. You can’t put a monetary value on that.

What social, society and corporate responsibilities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

I’ve been part of the school mentoring programme for the last 2 years. I go into local schools and help 16 and 18 year olds write their CV and coach them in interview techniques. I didn’t go to University so I am keen to show people that there is an alternative route to a successful career.

Can you describe your first day?

I went Go-Karting! I joined on a team event day so it was quite memorable.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining our Shared Services Organisation?

Talking from my own experience, I’ve really enjoyed the last 5 years here. Deloitte publicise that this is your career so it’s up to you to go out and make the most of the opportunities available, and it’s true.  Even my friends and family recognise that I am well looked after. It’s the total package, not just the salary.
