Life at Deloitte

Sarah Birtwell

Training and Knowledge Coordinator, Shared Services Organisation

What do my team and I do?

We coordinate offerings from start to finish: adding courses to the system, employee enrolment, ensuring materials and catering are ordered, external venues are booked and facilitators are up to date. My team supports all the learning teams, ensuring that courses are delivered smoothly and effectively.

Where does my team fit?

I work in one of Deloitte’s service lines called the Shared Services Organisation or the SSO as we like to call it. It provides the central functions to Deloitte such as HR, Finance, IT and Procurement. I support Deloitte’s central Learning function by helping to deliver training and development opportunities to everyone in the firm.

How does my role make an impact that matters with Deloitte?

Personal and professional development is a huge part of life at Deloitte so it is important that all courses run smoothly whether they are online or classroom based. It’s also important for compliance reasons so making sure that the right people get access to the most up to date course materials is critical to the business.

My biggest accomplishment.

Passing my assignment for the Law in HR Management degree which I did through the firm. I didn’t go to university and I struggled to write the assignments, however with some research and hard work I passed with a merit.

What I’m most proud of at Deloitte?

I did a sponsored mountain climb with Deloitte! Sixteen hours walking up three mountains for charity - it was hard but I really enjoyed it.

My favourite part of the job.

I enjoy the independence of scheduling courses myself. I have recently taken over a new course called Working Parents Transitions programme and I work together with the external facilitators to organise dates and sessions. It’s a great programme so I am happy to be involved with it.

Something more about me.

I trained as a make-up artist for theatre! Sadly, there wasn’t enough money in it!
