Life at Deloitte
Senior Associate, Tax Consulting - Indirect Tax
Hayley is a Senior Associate in our Indirect Tax Consulting team based in Leeds. She joined Deloitte in September 2011 having studied a LLB in Law at The University of Hull and an LPC at The College of Law in York.
What do you like most about your role?
I enjoy the wide variety of projects we are able to get involved in. From day one I have been included on client teams which have allowed me to experience different types of work and sectors meaning the no day is ever the same as the last. This variety means you never really have a dull moment.
What didn't you know, but wish you had known when applying and joining Deloitte?
I wish I had known about all the internal courses you are sent on in your first few years with the firm. Before starting in the Indirect Tax Consulting team I was a little nervous about the fact that I did not know a great deal about VAT, which is the vast majority of work we get involved in working in the Indirect Tax Consulting Team. However, there was no need to worry as you are sent on a number of internal courses to build up your VAT knowledge starting from the basics and it’s a great way to get to know others in your year group in other offices.
What aspects of your degree do you feel support you in your role and success at Deloitte?
My role involves a lot of research in relation to reaching solutions for clients and finding answers to client’s problems. The main way I do this is through statute books and case law so my law degree was invaluable in giving me the skills to be able to find the relevant provisions and case law effectively and efficiently.
What qualifications are you working towards and what support are you getting?
I am currently halfway through my CTA exams. We spend a few weeks in college in London prior to each exam and also get a study leave and exam leave allowance to enable us to revise in the run up to our exams.
What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis at Deloitte?
The day to day work in Indirect Tax Consulting at Deloitte is extremely varied. One day I can be working at a financial services client’s site undertaking a VAT review of the business, another day providing VAT advice for a due diligence and another day calculating the compliance filings for a manufacturing client. There really is not a typical day as we get involved in so many different client projects.
How do you deliver or contribute impact, leadership and innovation in your role?
You are given responsibility from day one in your Deloitte career, and are able to show leadership and innovative skills early on in your time at Deloitte. I have been given projects to lead already and even though every piece of work you do for a client goes through a review process prior to being sent out to the client, managing your own time frames and how you approach a project really allows you to demonstrate these skills.
What social, society and CSR activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?
Since joining Deloitte I have been very involved in activities outside of the day to day work. I have presented and facilitated a number of employability sessions for Bradford College students covering cv writing, interview skills and application form hints and tips. My year group in the Leeds office are also very sociable and we take it in turns to plans networking events for our year to ensure effective cross-service line communication.
How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?
Deloitte has played a huge role in my long term career goals. Deloitte offers a great career plan which means you can clearly map out your own career and use internal courses and exams to further your career within the firm. If you see your long term career outside of Deloitte, the firm provides you with the opportunity to gain internationally recognised professional qualifications and Deloitte is an powerful name to have on any CV.
