Life at Deloitte
Partner, Audit, Nottingham
I completed a law degree at Oxford University and originally joined the Manchester office of a predecessor firm of Deloitte as a graduate. I have spent my entire career within our audit business, progressing through the grades before being promoted to partner in 2009 and then moving to Nottingham in 2012.
What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?
I work with a large variety of clients, from fast growing, privately owned entrepreneurial businesses to FTSE 100 listed companies. It’s interesting and varied work that takes me across the UK and overseas. I work across a number of different industries, although mainly focus on the consumer business and technology / media / telecoms sectors. As an audit partner, I lead the teams ultimately responsible for providing public opinions on my clients’ external financial reporting. I also advise clients in areas such as corporate governance, accounting and capital markets transactions. I am also the talent partner for our corporate audit business, which comprises over 1,900 people across all of our offices.
What do you like most about the office and region that you work in?
The opportunity to work with a large variety of different clients and different types of work, which really develops our professionals. We have a close-knit team in the Nottingham office, which is well-connected to all of the other service lines locally and I really enjoy working closely with the team at all levels across all service lines. There’s a strong sense of global reach with a local delivery – the ability to solve large complex problems for clients, often with an international element, but delivered through a local team with the backing and support of the full capability of Deloitte.
Why your industry?
As above – CB and TMT, but most professionals in regional offices gain experience across a number of different industries. This means I also clients across many different industries, including manufacturing, professional services and infrastructure. This breadth of experience really helps our professionals to develop a wide range of skills.
What is your top tip for working in your industry?
Be prepared to listen, learn and show an interest in our clients’ businesses.
Which personality traits or skills aid success in your industry?
A willingness to learn and a genuine interest in our clients’ business and industries. You must enjoy working with people.
Audit quality is fundamental to our business and therefore an eye for detail, a willingness to challenge and a questioning mind are all very important attributes. What do you enjoy most about your industry?
What social, society and corporate responsibility activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?
As well as being involved in several community investment days over the years, through my work at Deloitte I was invited to join the Audit Committee at the Hallé Orchestra in a personal capacity. I really love the role – it gives me insight into a hugely interesting organisation and the opportunity to use the skills I’ve developed for the benefit of the orchestra.
What advice would you share to others considering a career in your industry?
Deloitte offers a hugely rewarding career that sees you develop faster than you ever thought possible. With this in mind you need to be open-minded and willing to listen and learn, but also prepared to contribute your own thoughts and ideas.
