Life at Deloitte

Xinyi Lee

Senior Associate, Audit / Banking & Capital Markets - London

I am a Senior Associate in Deloitte London’s Banking & Capital Markets Audit team. I joined Deloitte in September 2013 shortly after graduating from LSE with a First Class Honours degree in Accounting and Finance. To date I have worked on many different types of engagements including statutory audits, interim reviews and Client Asset audits for a multitude of clients, varying in size.

What work do you get involved in on a day to day basis?

As one of the more junior members of the team, I am usually responsible for performing the substantive testing on account line balances and testing around the client’s internal controls. This typically involves liaising with the client, performing and documenting the audit work, and working closely with other Deloitte specialists such as Audit Advisory, FITS and Tax.

I get to audit a wide range of clients ranging from small niche companies to high profile, multinational banking clients. I also have the opportunity to get involved in more complex work such as valuations work and hedge accounting in the London office.

Why your industry?

Working in the B&CM Group, I am able to get a good understanding of not just banks, but also various other financial institutions which operate in the finance sector such as brokerage firms and clearing houses. Moreover, I get the chance to audit not just one single function or department; but the audit client’s entire business.

What is your top tip for working in your industry?

Talk us through the most exciting project that you have worked on

I had worked on a brokerage firm audit engagement during my first year at Deloitte. Due to changes in the client organisation and a reduced number of staff in the Finance team, we were granted access to the client’s entire back office and accounting systems. Through discussions with the client and extracting reports directly from the systems, I developed a really good insight into how transactions flowed from the front office system into the back office system, and finally into their main accounting system.
What social, society and corporate responsibility activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

What social, society and corporate responsibility activities have you been involved with at Deloitte?

I am currently participating in the Deloitte Business Mentoring programme, where I take some time out every month to meet up with my teenage mentee; guiding and supporting her on a wide range of issues.

How has Deloitte played a role in your long term career goals?

Deloitte offers a wealth of opportunities to its employees. Should I wish to do something different once I qualify, I will have the opportunity go on secondments overseas or even move into another service line in Deloitte.  Saying that, I really enjoy what I do in B&CM, and it is not hard to imagine myself staying on for at least a couple more years!

What advice would you share to others considering a career in your industry?

Apply for spring and summer internships. The only way you will really understand what a job entails, is by experiencing it first-hand.
