Stories of our impact

Here comes Cardiff

Deloitte has had roots in Cardiff for over 100 years, delivering a full range of audit, advisory and tax services to many leading businesses across Wales and the South West. Our presence in the city continues to grow, and has just received a major boost with the creation of the Cardiff Nearshore Delivery Centre. Here’s what’s happening in the Welsh capital and beyond…

650 and counting

The Delivery Centre offers an extensive range of research and administrative services in support of our client-facing staff in the UK. It employs 650 people, with plans to continue recruiting until at least 2020. This already means a cumulative salary bill of over £12 million, bringing a fresh injection of spending into the local Welsh economy.

Given the wide variety of clients the Centre will support, we’ve explored a range of innovative avenues from which to recruit into the business. A key part of this has been our award-winning apprenticeship scheme, designed specifically for the centre. Developed in partnership with Cardiff & Vale College (CAVC), the Deloitte Business Administration Apprenticeship offers high-potential young people the chance to earn a salary while they gain the skills and qualifications they need for a career in professional services.

The Cardiff apprentice

So what’s it like to work as an apprentice in Cardiff? The apprenticeship gives successful applicants an insight into Deloitte’s inner workings, with tasks including research, compliance and administration. Apprentices each have a designated Deloitte mentor, support from CAVC industry experts, and access to the college’s facilities in the heart of the Cardiff Financial Services Enterprise Zone.

After their apprenticeship, candidates are offered permanent positions with the firm and opportunities to develop a career. Most opt to stay in the Delivery Centre, but others have applied to join our BrightStart scheme – a firmwide Higher Apprenticeship programme that leads to an industry-recognised professional qualification.

As well as making a positive impact for Deloitte, the growth of our presence in the locality brings undoubted benefits for Cardiff and the surrounding area too. First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, comments: “Deloitte’s expansion and jobs creation in Cardiff is great news. It’s really important that financial and professional services operations see Cardiff as a good place to do business – a vibrant and viable option outside London. I’m sure that Deloitte’s increasing presence in the capital will attract other companies to Wales too, and I wish them every success in the future.”
