Change for Charities: Deloitte welcomes VAT relief

Autumn Statement

3 December 2014

The Chancellor announced in today’s Autumn Statement that the government will refund the VAT that hospices incur, and from April 2015, UK search & rescue and air ambulance charities will be eligible to claim refunds on VAT they have paid on purchases of goods and services for their non-business activities.

Ben Powell, head of public sector tax at Deloitte said: “Refunding the VAT on hospices and search and rescue operations will provide important relief to these charities and organisations, particularly as they usually have high fixed asset and operational costs.  This helps to level the playing field and further encourage joint working between the public and charitable sectors.

“However, it will be important to see the detail of these changes.  In particular, other charities and private sector providers who provide services within the public sector will be interested to see whether these or similar changes could apply to them.”
