Deloitte comments on latest ONS retail sales figures
18 September 2014
Commenting on today’s ONS retail sales figures, Ian Geddes, UK head of retail at Deloitte, said:
“On the surface we see very strong volume growth against a weak comparative, highlighting the underlying demand. The large food retailers once again recorded growth following July’s decline, but at a cost as prices continued to fall. Non-food retail benefited from continued strong improvement in the clothing and household goods sectors. Clothing retailers held their nerve cutting back on the level of promotions and reaped the benefits. Furniture and electrical goods retailers were the main beneficiaries of improving consumer confidence and willingness to spend on big ticket items and the buoyancy of the UK housing market.
“This increase in discretionary spending is likely to continue to fuel the retail market in the coming months, and bodes well for the run up to Christmas as we enter the golden quarter.”
