Deloitte comments on ONS retail sales figures

23 April 2015

Commenting on today’s ONS retail sales figures, Ian Geddes, UK head of retail at Deloitte, said:

“The ONS numbers highlight a surprise 0.5% slowdown in month-on-month volume sales driven by declines in sales from petrol stations. Given that Easter fell in March this year we would have expected these numbers to be stronger. However, looking at the value of sales in the first quarter, it is clear that 2015 has got off to a strong start. With 0% inflation, real earnings still rising, an improving labour market and higher consumer confidence, we think the outlook for the retail sector will continue to improve in 2015.”
