Deloitte’s chief economist inflation figures comment

18 April 2018

Commenting on the latest inflation figures, published this morning by the Office for National Statistics, Ian Stewart, chief economist at Deloitte, the business advisory firm, said:

“Spring has arrived for consumers. Brexit-related weakness in the pound is fading, and with it inflation. Coupled with rising wages and record levels of employment, this is a boost to spending power. These numbers probably won’t stop the Bank of England from raising rates next month, but sharply lower inflation eases the upward pressure.”
