Deloitte appoints Dr. Siobhan Gardiner as climate change and environment lead in Deloitte Ventures
5 February 2020
Deloitte has appointed Dr. Siobhan Gardiner as climate change and environment lead in Deloitte Ventures.
Leading the climate change and environment studio within Deloitte Ventures, Siobhan will be working with clients and internal teams on climate change mitigation and environmental resilience.
This will include looking at how emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, could improve sustainability within business and futureproof operations, and working to implement these solutions both with clients and within the firm.
Siobhan joins Deloitte from Unilever, where she was a senior manager in sustainable technologies, reporting to the CIO. Siobhan was also recently awarded the ‘Woman of the Future Award’ in the Commonwealth category for her work in pushing technology transfer and policy regarding food security, access to education and addressing the challenges of gender inequality.
A biochemist by background, Siobhan has a PhD from Cranfield University which looked at environmental and market resilience of supply chains and ecosystem services. This research saw Siobhan highlighted as a leading innovator by the Biosciences & Biotechnology Research Council (BBSRC) in 2018.
“With the future of our planet at stake, businesses must launch into this new decade with action and accountability on climate change. I am thrilled to have joined the Deloitte Ventures team, working closely with experts in emerging technologies to develop new tools that will improve sustainability and reduce the climate impact of businesses in the UK and beyond,” says Dr. Siobhan Gardiner, climate change mitigation and environmental resilience lead in Deloitte Ventures.
Scott Campbell, partner and leader in Deloitte Ventures, adds: “Deloitte Ventures was conceived to find new ways to solve our client’s most urgent business challenges using emerging technologies. For the vast majority of organisations today, the leading challenge is how to make their businesses more sustainable, reduce their impact on climate change and achieve net zero emissions. New technologies have the vast potential to help organisations to achieve this, and Siobhan will be leading the team in developing solutions that do so.”
Siobhan joins a growing number of climate change experts at Deloitte as the firm is working more closely with clients to support their sustainability objectives and reduce the impact of their operations and services on the environment, as well as addressing these issues internally.
Deloitte’s new UK and North South Europe headquarters recently achieved the highest score for sustainability of any global commercial building fit-out. Using BREEAM, the leading green-building certification, Deloitte’s office scored a record 94%, far exceeding the ‘Outstanding’ threshold and in doing so, becoming the highest scoring BREEAM 2014 Refurbishment & Fit-out project in the world.
Deloitte started its Green Journey initiative in 2011 and has since seen building-related emissions drop 72% per employee. It has also eliminated single-use plastic cups from the London campus and ensured redundant office furniture from vacated offices was donated or recycled with nothing going to landfill.
The firm also collaborated with the ICAEW in 2019 to launch a dedicated climate change website and video learning to help businesses and finance professionals learn more about tackling climate change.
