Deloitte economist comments on this morning's inflation figures

16 October 2019

Commenting on the latest inflation figures, published this morning by the Office for National Statistics, Debapratim De, UK economist at Deloitte, said:

“Another month of below-target inflation should support consumer spending power and is good news for growth at a time of weaker industrial activity and investment. It also gives the Bank of England room to cut rates, if necessary.

But with wage growth near its fastest pace in more than a decade and relatively volatile fuel prices behind recent downward pressure on inflation, the period of low inflation may not persist, especially given the risk of a no-deal Brexit.”
