Deloitte Legal appoints new partner for data privacy, cybersecurity and telecoms

01 March 2022

Deloitte Legal has today announced the appointment of Cavan Fabris as a partner in its legal data privacy practice with a focus on data privacy, cybersecurity, and telecoms.

Cavan will be based in London and brings more than 25 years of industry, government and legal experience, most recently with EY Law where he was a director specialising in data privacy, cybersecurity, telecoms and AI law. Prior to this, Cavan was an economic and commercial diplomat for the US Department of State, and also held an in-house legal counsel role with Apple.

Joining Deloitte Legal as a partner, Cavan will oversee the delivery of pragmatic, business-focussed legal solutions across all aspects of privacy compliance, from interpretation of new laws through to the implementation of compliance programmes, enabling data transfers and dealing with data breaches or enforcement actions by authorities. Cavan will combine his legal expertise in these areas with the technical knowledge from Deloitte’s specialist cyber risk practice, as well as more broadly across the firm’s extensive multidisciplinary network.

Michael Castle, managing partner for Deloitte Legal commented: “The need for legal services across every type of digital risk is greater than ever. The consequences for not getting it right could be highly disruptive with long-lasting impact, and our clients need the specialist legal, technical and industry knowledge that these areas demand.

“We are listening to our clients. Cavan has a wealth of experience in privacy and cybersecurity as a legal discipline, having worked across both public and private sectors. His appointment joins the dots between Deloitte’s legal expertise and the firm’s technical privacy and cyber risk business. We are pleased to be expanding on the legal and tech offerings we’re able to bring to clients, at a time when many organisations are facing increasingly complex legal and cyber challenges.”

Cavan will add to Deloitte Legal’s existing leading market specialisms in all aspects of technology and data. The appointment is the latest indication of Deloitte’s continued investment and growth in legal technology.

Cavan Fabris, Deloitte Legal partner, stated: “In an increasingly digital world, it’s never been more important for businesses to stay one step ahead of the risks that it exposes. The regulatory stakes, and potential consequences – be it reputational or financial – have never been greater. Deloitte is a recognised leader in data privacy and cybersecurity and the breadth and depth of Deloitte Legal’s technology expertise is impressive. I look forward to building on our offerings across data privacy and cybersecurity; supporting clients as they navigate the legal problems both areas pose.”

Peter Gooch, cyber risk services partner at Deloitte, said: “The cybersecurity landscape gets increasingly sophisticated as threat actors evolve their tactics and continually look for weaknesses to exploit. Naturally, cyber incidents are not without their wider ramifications; be it data loss or the subsequent legal and regulatory implications. We are now able to combine our cybersecurity offerings, both preventative and remedial, with the specialist legal expertise that Deloitte Legal brings to help our clients overcome their data privacy and broader cybersecurity challenges from every angle.”

In the last two years, Deloitte Legal has more than doubled its UK lawyer headcount and tripled the number of partners. Deloitte’s cyber risk practice has more than 22,000 cyber professionals worldwide.
