Deloitte's senior economist comments on today's GDP figures

11 September 2020

Commenting on the latest GDP figures, Debapratim De, senior economist at Deloitte, said:

“Activity has bounced back strongly over the summer. Warm weather, pent-up demand, a rise in staycations and policy support have provided a much-needed boost to GDP. July’s growth figures are consistent with our expectations of a record-breaking 15% rise in output in the third quarter.

“But the risks of a further spike in COVID-19 cases, the impending withdrawal of furlough support, and continued uncertainty over Brexit loom large. We expect a loss in momentum after strong growth in the summer months, with activity reaching pre-pandemic levels only in 2022.”
