Deloitte's UK manufacturing leader, Duncan Johnston, comments on today’s PMI figures

The UK PMI data for June shows a reading of 63.9, down from 65.6 in May. Responding to this, Deloitte’s UK manufacturing leader Duncan Johnston said:

“Today’s data provide further evidence of the super-charged recovery in the manufacturing sector made possible by the vaccine roll-out. The continued expansion of production and a record build up in raw material inventory is consistent with Deloitte’s own forecast that UK economic activity will recover to pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year.

“It’s encouraging to see export orders continuing to rise, including from EU countries, indicating that the post-Brexit disruption to trade flows seen earlier in the year has begun to abate.

“This strong performance has led to a continued growth in jobs. In the face of skill shortages, manufacturers are hiring temporary and less skilled workers to meet demand, a welcome boost as the furlough scheme starts to unwind.

“We expect these positive trends to continue over the summer months, although inflationary pressures are likely to build up as manufacturers pass increases in input prices onto customers.”
