Deloitte's UK manufacturing leader, Duncan Johnston, comments on today’s PMI figures

“Today’s data demonstrates the resilience of the manufacturing sector during a challenging period in November. Not only has output grown for more than 18 months despite significant labour and raw material shortages, but 63 per cent of manufacturers expect production to rise in the next year. This optimism is consistent with Deloitte’s own economic forecast that UK economic activity will recover to pre-pandemic levels by spring next year.

“However, uncertainty remains: the continued fall in export orders, weaker demand from China and new coronavirus variants risk derailing the positive momentum of the manufacturing sector.

“Manufacturers’ attention is focused on these short-term challenges, preventing them from planning for long-term growth and digitising their operations to improve productivity.”
