Deloitte's UK manufacturing industry leader, Duncan Johnston, responds to today’s IHS Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI figures
1 October 2020
“Today’s PMI reporting a decline to 54.1 in September from 55.2 in August shows that recovery in manufacturing is continuing, albeit at a slowing pace. This illustrates that order intake is rising and the sentiment remains broadly positive, but there are some worrying signs such as rising input prices and further job losses last month.
“Two sectors that are particularly important to the UK economy continue to be significantly affected by lower demand: commercial aerospace and automotive.
“Manufacturing leaders are eagerly awaiting the government’s revamped industrial strategy to provide much-needed impetus for recovery, especially in areas outside the South-East.”
