Deloitte CEO David Sproul comments on Industrial Strategy Green Paper
23 January 2017
David Sproul, CEO at Deloitte, said:
“We welcome today’s proposals for a modern Industrial Strategy. The UK scores highly in global competitiveness league tables, but our country still faces the long-standing issue of weak productivity.
“The Government’s plans signal a fresh start as we prepare for a new relationship with Europe and a sign of improving collaboration between policymakers, business and educators. I believe they are a promising signal of the commitment to maintaining our country’s strength as an innovative, creative, competitive economy.
“The Government’s commitment to investing in technical education will be critical to having a workforce equipped with the skills needed to make the most of advances in technology. It will also play an important role in creating opportunities for young people across the country. Our research has shown participation rates in technical education among young women and disadvantaged young people are very low and doing more to promote careers in the technical sectors to attract these groups will increase diversity – one of the critical elements of the innovation our businesses and country need to set the stage for long-term economic success.
“By providing more vocational routes into the workplace and increasing the focus on the skills needed for the business of the future, the Government can ensure our nation continues to benefit from a technology-driven shift from low skill, routine jobs to higher-skill, non-routine occupations.”
