One million people. One million stories. One million futures.

23 June 2020

  • Deloitte has made an impact on one million futures - a year ahead of target;
  • Over £21 million and 115,000 hours contributed to UK charities, schools and social enterprises;
  • Moses – the one millionth person helped by Deloitte’s One Million Futures programme – shares his story

In 2016, Deloitte put purpose at the heart of a responsible business initiative to help one million people get to where they want to be through access to education and employment. By focusing on skills, education and inclusion the ‘One Million Futures’ programme has today exceeded its one million target one year ahead of schedule through meaningful partnerships with 90 inspiring charities, schools and social enterprises across the UK.

Richard Houston, CEO of Deloitte UK, said: “I’m utterly delighted that we have reached this incredible milestone and made an impact that matters for one million people in the UK. This was always an ambitious five-year target - yet we’ve achieved it in just four years. This is entirely down to the commitment and dedication of our society partners plus the goodwill, time, energy and skills of our people.

“I’m so proud of the role we have played in making a difference to one million futures.”

More than three-quarters of the firm’s people (15,510) have volunteered a combined 115,000 hours. In addition, the firm has carried out 36,500 pro-bono business hours and the total contribution by the firm equates to over £21 million directly benefiting charities, social enterprises and schools across the UK. Initiatives have included nurturing individuals through mentoring and employability skills workshops through to supporting organisations with their strategic ambitions.

One in a million

Deloitte has recognised Moses as the millionth person helped by the programme.

Deloitte met Moses via its charity partner The Prince’s Trust. Moses was raised in Zimbabwe and at 16 came to the UK in search of a better life and to follow his dream of playing professional football. He soon found himself in a country he didn’t know at all, homeless and hungry. He then met Deloitte via The Prince’s Trust and things started to change as the partnership helped Moses to find his voice and give him the confidence to follow his dreams.

Moses said: “Growing up in Zimbabwe I always had hope, but life was really tough for my family with no water, resources and opportunity. Despite leaving everything I knew behind, it was hope that brought me to the UK. My dream was sadly not the reality as I was soon homeless and hopeless.

“The Princes Trust and Deloitte gave me someone to talk to, someone to listen. I signed up for youth group activities and met other young people like me. They helped me find a community in which I felt safe and I made friends. My confidence has been restored.”

Today Moses is settled in London, has a job and is involved in his community. He coaches youth football and is starting to live the life he had hoped for all those years ago in Zimbabwe.

Houston continued: “It’s so inspiring to see the achievements of Moses and know that there are one million people who are now on their way to where they want to be. But having reached one million futures, we won’t stop now.

“Today I’m pleased to announce Five Million Futures. As part of Deloitte’s global WorldClass ambition of supporting 50 million people by 2030, the UK will join with colleagues across Europe and the Middle East to deliver an even greater impact in our communities. It’s another bold target but we will build on what we’ve learned and achieved to date to make a difference for those most in need.”

Deloitte UK is continuing with its current charity and social enterprise partnerships as part of the Five Million Futures initiative.
