What is Family Enterprise Consulting?

Providing advice, our new services offering will help families navigate inevitable challenges and organise themselves in a positive and constructive way; to foster more harmonious working relationships and ultimately build greater family and enterprise sustainability, especially at critical times of generational transition.

Overall, the work that Peter and Alex do includes a mixture of facilitation and the provision of advice and their services and expertise centre on succession planning and family governance. A typical process would involve helping a family articulate their vision and values and then assisting them in designing a bespoke family governance structure set out in a family charter or family constitution.

Clarity and Alignment

The ultimate goal is to create clarity and alignment within the family so that the family is a positive influence on their enterprise and vice versa, avoiding the “clogs to clogs in three generations” phenomenon which is often a result of families avoiding “difficult conversations” and relationships breaking down. In particular matters for discussion and agreement as part of projects with families tend to include the following key matters:

  • Family vision, mission and values
  • Family job specifications, joining requirements, accountability and principles of remuneration
  • Family governance structure
  • Succession arrangements
  • Appointment and role of Family Directors
  • Decision making
  • Ownership principles and exit mechanisms
  • Dividend policy
  • Establishment and working of a Family Council, and other family forums if appropriate
  • Family meetings
  • Communication
  • Family education and development

Who and How?

Who do we help?

Our clients are all families who either own a business or have a family office – some are small families, some are large families (think 300 plus family members!) and they live all around the world. Our clients operate across a broad range of industry sectors and geographies. Some are small nuclear families, struggling with a transition from the founder to the next generation, others are facing the challenge of moving from a sibling partnership to a cousin consortium and others are multi-generational, international business families who want to continue to work on strengthening their family and their business interests. The common thread is that we only work with families. It’s what we love doing.

How we help

Through our work with family businesses, we have learnt that truth is stranger than fiction, and each family situation is unique.

As a family business consulting group our approach is to use our experience as facilitators and professional advisers to help our clients create a successful framework for the future that results in a successful family, a successful business and successful business ownership.

This means working together with you to define what success is and then it means working alongside you to make and implement decisions that will help you take critical steps forward - for many families this means creating a written family constitution, for others it means developing an education programme for the next generation or even creating a family history book– in essence our approach is centred around your needs.

We are committed to working with family businesses and family offices to meet their objectives whatever they may be; and if we can’t help you ourselves, we will help you find someone who can.

As a family business consultancy our approach is to:

  • Challenge you to think about what you really want – what is your vision?
  • Ensure that the views of the whole family are heard
  • Use our understanding of different cultural perspectives and our well-established international links.
