Economic impact of the 2014 FIBA World Cup for the Federación Española de Baloncesto

The Deloitte Sports Business Group was engaged by the Federación Española de Baloncesto (FEB) to quantify the economic impact of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup on the economy of Spain and each individual host city.

We consulted directly with key stakeholders including FEB management, the local organising committee, competing teams, sponsors and media to understand their expenditure related to the event in each of the six host cities. In addition, we conducted surveys with visiting fans to understand their expenditure in Spain.

We calculated the economic impact associated with the 2014 FIBA World Cup using a model tailored to the Spanish economy, incorporating direct, indirect and induced impacts. The project also outlined the social impact of the event in Spain, by presenting a summary of information regarding demographics and perceptions gathered from our spectator survey.

The FEB used our report as a key tool to explain to relevant stakeholders the benefits and financial impact of the event on Spain. The FEB ran a road show to each of the host cities to present the results and engaged in PR activity to publicise key findings.
